Cotula coronopifolia, commonly known as 'Brass Buttons,' is a low-growing, spreading aquatic plant that is popular for its bright green, button-like foliage. It forms a dense carpet of foliage and is a charming addition to pond environments.

2. Sunlight Requirements: 'Brass Buttons' thrives in full sun to partial shade. Ensure that your pond receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day for healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Adequate light promotes compact growth and lush green color.

3. Water Depth: Plant Cotula coronopifolia 'Brass Buttons' in water with a depth of 2 to 4 inches. This allows the plant to establish its roots in the substrate while remaining partially submerged. It is suitable for the shallower edges of ponds and water features.

4. Soil and Substrate: Use a well-draining aquatic planting mix or a loamy soil for planting 'Brass Buttons' in your pond. Plant it directly into the substrate at the recommended water depth, ensuring good contact between the roots and soil.

5. Fertilization: Cotula coronopifolia generally does not require extensive fertilization in a pond setting. The nutrients present in the pond water should be sufficient for its growth. However, you can use a balanced aquatic plant fertilizer sparingly if growth appears sluggish.

6. Water Quality: Maintain good water quality in your pond. Regularly monitor and adjust the pH levels to keep them between 6.5 and 7.5. Ensure that your pond water is free from pollutants and toxins to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage.

7. Pruning and Maintenance: Trim away overgrown or straggly growth as needed to maintain the plant's appearance. Regularly thin out the growth to prevent overcrowding and promote air circulation. 'Brass Buttons' is generally low-maintenance.

8. Winter Care: In colder climates, 'Brass Buttons' may die back in the winter and regrow in the spring. It is generally hardy, but if you expect freezing temperatures, you can mulch the base of the plant to protect it.

9. Pests and Diseases: Cotula coronopifolia 'Brass Buttons' is relatively resistant to pests and diseases in pond environments. However, occasional inspection for signs of aphids or snails is a good practice. Treat any infestations promptly with appropriate pesticides if necessary.

By following these care guidelines, you can successfully cultivate Cotula coronopifolia 'Brass Buttons' in your pond. This charming aquatic plant not only adds a lush carpet of bright green foliage to your pond but also contributes to a healthy aquatic ecosystem by providing habitat and shelter for various pond inhabitants.
