Mini Bromeliad (Neoregalia) Care Sheet for Terrariums

Introduction: Mini bromeliads are unique and colorful plants that can thrive in a terrarium environment. With their vibrant foliage and compact size, they make excellent additions to indoor gardens. To ensure the health and well-being of your mini bromeliads, follow these care guidelines:

1. Terrarium Setup:

  • The best option is to plant them as a epiphyte atached to decor.
  • Use a well-ventilated terrarium with a lid to maintain humidity. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  • If you want to plant them, Choose a substrate mix with good aeration and drainage, such as a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss.

2. Light:

  • Provide bright, indirect light. Mini bromeliads generally prefer filtered sunlight or dappled shade.
  • Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight for extended periods, as it may scorch their leaves.

3. Temperature and Humidity:

  • Maintain a temperature range of 60-80°F (15-27°C). Mini bromeliads are adaptable but generally thrive in warmer conditions.
  • Keep humidity levels between 50-70%. Misting can be beneficial, especially in drier environments.

4. Watering:

  • Water sparingly, allowing the top inch of the substrate to dry out between waterings.
  • Use room temperature, filtered water. Bromeliads are sensitive to minerals and chemicals found in tap water.
  • Water directly into the cup (central reservoir) formed by the leaves, keeping it filled but not overflowing.

5. Fertilization:

  • Feed your mini bromeliads with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Use a bromeliad or orchid fertilizer with a formulation like 1/2 strength recommended on the package.

6. Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Trim dead or decaying leaves using sterilized scissors or pruning shears to maintain the plant's appearance and health.
  • Remove spent flowers to encourage new growth.

7. Air Circulation:

  • Ensure good air circulation within the terrarium to prevent the growth of mold or mildew.
  • Open the terrarium lid periodically to refresh the air.

8. Monitoring for Pests:

  • Keep an eye out for pests such as aphids or spider mites. Treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

9. Repotting:

  • Repot mini bromeliads when they outgrow their current container or when the substrate breaks down. Use fresh substrate during repotting.

By following these care guidelines, you can create a thriving environment for your mini bromeliads in a terrarium setting. Remember that individual species may have specific care needs, so it's essential to research the particular type of mini bromeliad you have for more tailored care.
