💛 Philodendron 'Painted Lady' Care Sheet
🌿 Bright, Bold & Beautiful
Philodendron 'Painted Lady' is a stunning climbing aroid loved for its bright chartreuse leaves, green marbled variegation and striking pink to reddish stems. As each new leaf emerges, it gradually develops its unique pattern, making every leaf one of a kind.
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is best.
- More light produces stronger growth and better variegation.
- Avoid harsh afternoon sun.
- Too little light can result in smaller leaves and slower growth.
💧 Water
Water when the top 2–4 cm of the growing medium feels dry.
- Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away.
- Never leave the pot standing in water.
- Reduce watering during winter.
💡 Overwatering is the most common cause of root problems.
💦 Humidity
Prefers 60–80% humidity, but adapts well to normal indoor conditions. Higher humidity encourages larger leaves and healthier growth.
🌡️ Temperature
- Ideal: 18–30°C
- Minimum: 10°C
- Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
🌱 Growing Medium
Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix containing:
- Orchid bark
- Perlite or pumice
- Coco chips or coco peat
- A small amount of quality potting soil
Good drainage keeps the roots healthy.
🌿 Fertilising
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at ¼–½ strength.
Reduce feeding during winter.
🪴 Climbing Support
'Painted Lady' is a natural climber. A moss pole or trellis encourages:
- Larger leaves
- Faster growth
- Stronger stems
✂️ Maintenance
- Remove damaged or yellow leaves.
- Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust.
- Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound.
⚠️ Common Problems
🟡 Yellow leaves: Usually caused by overwatering.
🤎 Brown leaf edges: Often due to low humidity or inconsistent watering.
🌿 Small leaves: Usually indicate insufficient light or no climbing support.
🐛 Pests: Watch for spider mites, thrips, mealybugs and scale insects.
🐾 Pet Safety
⚠️ Toxic if chewed by pets or people due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs and children.
