🌿 Anthurium clarinervium Care Sheet

💚 Meet the Velvet Jewel

Anthurium clarinervium is one of the most sought-after foliage plants in the world. Native to the limestone forests of Mexico, it is famous for its thick, velvety dark green leaves highlighted by striking white veins. Slow-growing but incredibly rewarding, this plant makes a spectacular statement in any indoor jungle or terrarium display.

☀️ Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal.

  • Keep out of direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Morning sun for an hour or two is generally fine.
  • Too little light results in slower growth and smaller leaves.

💧 Water

Allow the top 2–3 cm of the growing medium to dry before watering.

  • Water thoroughly until excess drains away.
  • Never allow the pot to stand in water.
  • Reduce watering during winter when growth slows.

💡 Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

💦 Humidity

This tropical species loves humidity.

  • Ideal: 60–80%
  • Can adapt to average indoor humidity but grows best with higher moisture levels.
  • A humidifier or terrarium-style cabinet encourages larger, healthier leaves.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–28°C
  • Minimum: 10°C
  • Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

🌱 Growing Medium

Excellent drainage is essential.

A chunky aroid mix works best, containing:

  • Orchid bark
  • Coco chips or coco peat
  • Perlite or pumice
  • Charcoal
  • Sphagnum moss (optional)

Healthy roots require plenty of airflow.

🌿 Fertilising

Feed during active growth (spring to early autumn).

  • Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at ¼–½ strength every 2–4 weeks.
  • Flush the pot occasionally with clean water to prevent salt build-up.

Less feeding is required during winter.

✂️ Maintenance

  • Remove damaged or yellow leaves.
  • Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust.
  • Repot every 2–3 years or when roots outgrow the container.

🌸 Flowers

Although grown mainly for its stunning foliage, mature plants produce attractive greenish-white flowers with a cream spadix throughout the growing season.

🪴 Growth

  • Growth rate: Slow to moderate
  • Mature height: 40–60 cm
  • Mature leaf size: 20–35 cm

With good care, each new leaf becomes larger and more impressive than the last.

⚠️ Common Problems

🟡 Yellow leaves
Usually caused by overwatering or poor drainage.

🤎 Brown leaf edges
Often caused by low humidity, underwatering or mineral-rich water.

Too much direct sunlight.

🐌 Pests
Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, scale insects and thrips. Inspect the undersides of leaves regularly.
