🌿 Chlorophytum comosum ‘Bonnie’
Curly Spider Plant
Chlorophytum comosum ‘Bonnie’ is a compact, curly-leaved form of the classic Spider Plant. Its arching, twisted foliage gives it a fuller and more unusual appearance, while its easy-going nature makes it an excellent choice for beginners.
It is well suited to indoor growing, hanging baskets, shelves and bright terrariums with good ventilation.
☀️ Light
🌤️ Bright, indirect light is ideal.
‘Bonnie’ can tolerate moderate light, but growth will be slower and the variegation may become less pronounced.
Avoid strong, direct afternoon sun through glass, especially in summer, as this can scorch the leaves.
Best: Bright filtered light
Tolerates: Moderate light
Avoid: Prolonged harsh direct sunlight💧 Watering
Allow the upper layer of the growing medium to dry slightly before watering again.
Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Do not leave the pot sitting permanently in stagnant water.
Spider Plants are relatively forgiving if you occasionally forget to water, but consistently waterlogged conditions can cause root problems.
💡 Tip: Brown leaf tips are common and can be caused by inconsistent watering, very dry air, salt accumulation or water quality.
🌱 Growing Medium
Use a loose, well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged.
A suitable mix can contain:
- Coco peat or peat
- Fine bark or compost
- Perlite or another drainage component
Good drainage is more important than using a particular recipe.
🌡️ Temperature
🌡️ Ideal: 18–28°C
‘Bonnie’ grows well at normal indoor temperatures.
Protect it from prolonged temperatures below approximately 10°C and from cold draughts.
💦 Humidity
Average household humidity is usually sufficient.
Higher humidity can encourage healthier foliage, but extremely high humidity combined with poor airflow can increase the risk of fungal and bacterial problems.
There is generally no need to mist the foliage.
🌿 Feeding
Feed during active growth with a balanced, diluted plant fertiliser.
A light feeding every 2–4 weeks during the growing season is generally sufficient.
Avoid excessive fertilisation. Spider Plants can develop brown leaf tips when fertiliser salts accumulate in the growing medium.
Reduce feeding during periods of slow winter growth.
✂️ Pruning & Maintenance
Remove completely brown or damaged leaves at their base using clean scissors.
‘Bonnie’ produces long stems carrying small plantlets ("spiderettes"). These can either be left attached for a fuller display or removed and propagated.
Occasionally flush the growing medium thoroughly with clean water to help prevent fertiliser salt accumulation.
🌱 Propagation
Propagation is particularly easy.
Plantlets
The small plantlets produced on the flowering stems can be rooted while still attached to the mother plant or removed and planted separately.
Keep the growing medium lightly moist while roots develop.
Division
Large, established plants can also be divided carefully into smaller sections when repotting.
🪴 Repotting
Repot when the plant has become severely root-bound or when the growing medium has deteriorated.
Spider Plants tolerate being somewhat root-bound and do not necessarily require a large pot.
Choose a container with adequate drainage and only move up one pot size at a time.
🐛 Common Problems
Brown leaf tips:
💧 Inconsistent watering, dry conditions, salt accumulation or water quality can all contribute.
Yellowing leaves:
🌧️ Often associated with excessive watering or poor drainage, although older leaves naturally yellow and die.
Pale or stretched growth:
☀️ Usually indicates insufficient light.
Root rot:
💦 Caused by persistently wet, poorly aerated growing media.
Pests:
🐛 Spider Plants can occasionally be affected by mealybugs, scale, aphids or spider mites. Inspect the foliage and growing points regularly.
