General Overview

  • Type: Carnivorous plant (Sundew)
  • Growth Form: Rosette-forming with broad, spoon-shaped leaves
  • Temperature Range: Ideal: 18°C–30°C
  • Humidity: High, ideally 60%–80%
  • Lifespan: Perennial with proper care

Lighting

  • Full Sun: Drosera latifolia requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain vibrant coloration and robust growth.
  • Indoor Placement: In South Africa, place the plant near a north- or east-facing window for maximum sunlight exposure.
  • Artificial Light Alternative: If natural light is unavailable, use full-spectrum grow lights for 12–16 hours daily. Keep the lights 15–20 cm above the plant.

Terrarium Setup

  • Container:

    • Use a clear, ventilated terrarium to maintain high humidity. Open terrariums or those with vents are preferable to prevent overheating in direct sunlight.
  • Substrate:

    • A mix of 50% sphagnum peat moss and 50% silica sand or perlite is ideal. The substrate should be acidic, nutrient-poor, and well-draining.
  • Watering:

    • Water only with distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.
    • Keep the substrate consistently moist, preferably by the tray method. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Placement:

    • Place the terrarium in a north- or east-facing window with direct sunlight. Ensure adequate ventilation if temperatures exceed 30°C.
  • Feeding:

    • The plant naturally captures small flying insects. Supplemental feeding with dried bloodworms or diluted fish food is optional but should be minimal to prevent mold growth.

Indoor Care

  • Lighting:

    • Position the plant near a north- or east-facing window with strong sunlight.
    • Supplement with artificial grow lights if natural light is insufficient.
  • Temperature and Humidity:

    • Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 30°C.
    • Humidity should stay above 60%; use a humidity tray or mist the air if needed.
  • Air Circulation:

    • Provide gentle airflow to prevent fungal issues, especially in high-humidity environments.

Outdoor Care

  • Lighting:

    • Place in a sunny location where it receives 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
    • Provide light shade during the hottest part of the day if temperatures exceed 30°C.
  • Watering:

    • Use the tray method to ensure the soil remains consistently moist.
    • Monitor water levels closely during hot weather to prevent drying out.
  • Feeding:

    • Outdoor plants will naturally attract insects, eliminating the need for supplemental feeding.

Seasonal Care

  • Winter: Drosera latifolia is not frost-tolerant. Move the plant indoors or to a greenhouse if temperatures drop below 10°C. Reduce watering slightly but keep the substrate moist.
  • Spring & Summer: These are the active growing seasons. Provide ample sunlight and water to encourage vigorous growth.

Potential Issues

  • Sunburn: Gradually acclimate the plant to full sunlight if it was previously grown in low light.
  • Mold and Fungal Growth: Ensure proper ventilation and avoid overwatering, especially in terrariums.
  • Pests: Rare, but aphids, mealybugs, or spider mites may occasionally infest the plant. Treat with insecticidal soap or remove pests manually.

With the right conditions, Drosera latifolia will flourish, showcasing its broad, dewy leaves and carnivorous capabilities. This spectacular species makes a unique and rewarding addition to any collection!
