Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus Lily) Tub Care Sheet
General Information:
Common Name: Lotus Lily
Scientific Name: Nelumbo nucifera
Type: Aquatic perennial
Hardiness Zones: 4-11 (dormant in winter)
Sunlight: Full sun (6+ hours daily)
Container Selection:
Size: Minimum 60 cm (24 inches) in diameter and 30 cm (12 inches) deep
Material: Plastic, ceramic, or fiberglass (avoid porous materials that leach chemicals)
Drainage: No holes (lotus needs still water)
Planting Medium:
Use heavy garden loam or clay-based soil (avoid potting mix as it floats)
Mix in slow-release aquatic fertilizer tablets for best growth
Planting Instructions:
Fill the tub with 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) of soil.
Place the tuber horizontally on the soil surface with growing tips facing up.
Cover the tuber lightly with soil but do not bury the growing tip.
Slowly add 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) of water above the soil level.
Allow the plant to establish before adding more water depth.
Water Requirements:
Maintain a water depth of 30–50 cm (12–20 inches) once the plant is established.
Use dechlorinated or aged water (avoid tap water with high chlorine levels).
Top up water as needed due to evaporation.
Light and Temperature:
Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Grows best in temperatures between 22°C and 35°C.
Protect from frost in colder climates by overwintering indoors.
Fertilizing:
Apply aquatic plant fertilizer tablets monthly during the growing season (spring to autumn).
Avoid over-fertilizing, as it may lead to algae blooms.
Pruning and Maintenance:
Remove yellowing or dead leaves regularly to maintain plant health.
Trim spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
Clean out debris to prevent decay and maintain water quality.
Winter Care:
In warm climates, lotus will stay green year-round.
In colder areas, stop fertilizing in autumn and allow the plant to go dormant.
Move tub to a frost-free area or let the tuber rest at the bottom of the container under water.
Pests and Problems:
Aphids: Rinse off with a strong stream of water or introduce natural predators like ladybugs.
Algae growth: Minimize nutrients in water and provide partial shade.
Rotting tubers: Ensure proper planting depth and avoid disturbing established plants.
Additional Tips:
Lotus lilies take time to establish but will reward you with spectacular blooms.
Avoid disturbing the roots once the plant is established.
Larger tubs encourage bigger plants and more flowers.
By following these guidelines, you can enjoy a thriving Nelumbo nucifera in a tub, bringing elegance and beauty to your outdoor space!
