🌿 Nitella sp. – Aquarium & Pond Care
Nitella sp. is a delicate freshwater macroalga belonging to the Characeae family. It forms attractive, finely branched green growth and can provide excellent cover for small aquatic animals and microorganisms. Unlike conventional aquarium plants, Nitella is a true alga and does not have roots, stems or leaves in the usual sense.
🐠 Aquarium Care
💡 Light: Moderate to high
Nitella generally benefits from good lighting. Strong light can encourage compact, attractive growth, but excessive light combined with high nutrients may also encourage unwanted algae.🌡️ Temperature: Approximately 15–28 °C
A stable temperature is preferable. Avoid sudden temperature changes.💧 Water: Freshwater
Clean, well-oxygenated water is recommended. Nitella can tolerate a range of water conditions, but stable conditions usually produce better growth.pH: Approximately 6.5–8.0
💨 Flow: Low to moderate
Gentle water movement helps keep the growth clean and supplies CO₂ and nutrients. Avoid very strong flow, which can break apart the delicate branches.🌱 Planting:
Nitella does not need to be planted in substrate. It can be left floating, gently anchored, or allowed to form loose submerged colonies. If attaching it, avoid crushing or tightly tying the delicate growth.🧪 Fertilisation:
Nitella obtains nutrients directly from the surrounding water. Moderate nutrient availability is generally sufficient. Avoid heavy fertilisation, particularly in aquariums already experiencing algae problems.CO₂: Not essential
Additional CO₂ may improve growth in a planted aquarium, but healthy growth is possible without injected CO₂ when lighting and nutrients are suitable.🪴 Pond Care
Nitella can also grow naturally in suitable freshwater ponds, dams and other permanent water bodies.
☀️ Light: Full sun to partial shade
Good light generally supports stronger growth, although some protection from extreme summer conditions can be beneficial in very shallow ponds.💧 Water depth: Submerged
Allow sufficient water depth for the growth to remain submerged, particularly during hot weather or when evaporation is significant.🌡️ Temperature: Adaptable
Established populations can tolerate seasonal temperature changes. Extremely warm, shallow water can place additional stress on submerged growth.🌱 Placement:
Allow Nitella to grow naturally underwater rather than burying it deeply in substrate. It can form loose underwater beds and provide valuable habitat for small aquatic organisms.✂️ Propagation & Maintenance
Nitella is easily propagated from healthy pieces of existing growth. Simply separate a portion of the plant and place it into suitable freshwater.
Growth can be left to develop naturally or periodically thinned if it becomes too dense. Remove decaying material to maintain water quality.
⚠️ Important
Nitella species can be difficult to identify accurately without examination of reproductive structures. “Nitella sp.” should therefore be used when the exact species has not been confirmed.
Before introducing Nitella into natural waterways, check local regulations and ensure that the particular species is permitted in your area. Never release aquarium or pond plants into natural water systems.
💚 A delicate plant with a surprisingly useful role: Nitella can add a natural, finely textured underwater habitat without dominating an aquarium or pond.
