🌿 Chara sp. – Stonewort / Muskgrass
Chara sp. is a freshwater charophyte (green alga) that looks remarkably similar to a small underwater plant. It forms branched, often bushy growth and can provide excellent shelter and habitat for small aquatic organisms.
🐠 Aquarium Care
💡 Light: Moderate to high
Good lighting encourages healthy, compact growth. Avoid excessive lighting if the aquarium already has significant algae problems.🌡️ Temperature: Approximately 15–28 °C
Chara is adaptable, but stable water temperatures are preferable to sudden fluctuations.💧 Water: Freshwater
Clean, well-oxygenated water is ideal. Chara can tolerate a reasonably broad range of water conditions.pH: Approximately 6.5–8.5
💨 Flow: Low to moderate
Gentle circulation helps provide nutrients and CO₂ throughout the growth. Very strong flow can damage or dislodge delicate branches.🌱 Planting:
Chara does not need to be planted like a conventional rooted aquarium plant. Pieces can be placed loosely on the substrate or gently anchored. It can also grow naturally in suitable substrate.🧪 Fertilisation:
Chara absorbs nutrients from the surrounding water and generally does not require heavy fertilisation. Moderate nutrient levels are usually sufficient.CO₂: Not essential
Additional CO₂ may encourage faster growth, but Chara can grow successfully without injected CO₂.🪴 Pond Care
Chara is particularly well suited to natural-style ponds where it can establish submerged growth.
☀️ Light: Full sun to partial shade
Good light generally encourages stronger growth.💧 Water: Permanent freshwater
Chara prefers to remain submerged. Avoid allowing ponds to dry out completely where possible.🌡️ Temperature: Adaptable
Established growth can tolerate normal seasonal temperature changes. Extremely warm, shallow water can cause stress.🌱 Placement:
Allow Chara to grow submerged, where it can form underwater beds or loose colonies. It can provide valuable habitat for small aquatic organisms and contribute to a natural pond environment.✂️ Propagation & Maintenance
Chara can be propagated by separating healthy pieces of growth and placing them into suitable freshwater.
It can be left to establish naturally or thinned when it becomes too dense. Remove excessive or decomposing material when necessary to maintain good water quality.
⚠️ Important
Chara sp. means the exact species has not been confirmed. Different Chara species can vary considerably in appearance, habitat and tolerance.
Do not release aquarium or cultivated pond material into natural waterways. Always check applicable local regulations before introducing aquatic organisms outside their intended cultivation environment.
🌿 A little different from your average aquarium plant: Chara is technically a green alga, but its highly organised, plant-like structure makes it an interesting addition to natural aquariums and ponds.
