Overview

Red Strawberry Moss is a beautiful true moss prized for its compact growth, lush green cushions, and striking red to pink highlights that develop under ideal conditions. Unlike Selaginella, Red Strawberry Moss is a genuine bryophyte and reproduces by spores rather than flowers or seeds.

Its soft texture and vibrant colour make it an excellent choice for closed terrariums, vivariums, paludariums, moss displays, and shaded miniature landscapes.

Light Requirements

Red Strawberry Moss prefers bright, filtered light.

Avoid:

  • Direct afternoon sun
  • Hot windowsills
  • Strong grow lights placed too close

Too much light may scorch the moss, while too little light can slow growth and reduce its rich colouration.

Watering

Never allow the moss to dry out completely.

Keep the growing medium evenly moist using:

  • Rainwater
  • Reverse osmosis (RO) water
  • Distilled water

If using tap water, ensure it is low in minerals, as repeated exposure to hard water may reduce growth over time.

Mist when required to maintain moisture, but avoid waterlogged conditions.

Humidity

High humidity is essential.

Ideal humidity:

  • 70–100%

Red Strawberry Moss performs exceptionally well in:

  • Closed terrariums
  • Vivariums
  • Humidity cabinets
  • Covered propagation containers

In open containers, occasional misting may be required during dry weather.

Temperature

Ideal growing temperatures are between 15°C and 25°C.

The moss appreciates cooler nights and generally performs better in moderate temperatures than in excessive heat.

Avoid prolonged exposure above 30°C.

Growing Medium

Red Strawberry Moss grows well on a range of moisture-retentive surfaces including:

  • Long-fibre sphagnum moss
  • Peat-based substrates
  • Fine bark
  • Lava rock
  • Natural stone
  • Weathered wood

The surface should remain consistently damp but not submerged.

Fertilising

Very little fertiliser is required.

If desired, feed only occasionally using a highly diluted fertiliser (approximately one-quarter strength) during active growth.

Over-fertilising may encourage algae and can damage the moss.

Growth Habit

Red Strawberry Moss spreads slowly by producing new shoots that gradually form dense cushions or carpets.

Under ideal conditions it develops an attractive, compact appearance that makes it ideal for foregrounds and decorative moss displays.

Propagation

Propagation is simple.

Small pieces can be gently separated and placed onto a moist substrate where they will gradually establish and spread.

Maintaining high humidity during establishment greatly improves success.
