🌿 Ultra-Fine Liverwort on Sphagnum Moss Care Guide

Ultra-Fine Liverwort is an incredibly hardy liverwoth that look extremely delicate, carpet-forming bryophyte that creates a lush, bright green mat over sphagnum moss. Its tiny, intricate growth makes it highly sought after for terrariums, paludariums, moss displays, and humid vivariums. Unlike flowering plants, liverworts do not produce roots, flowers, or seeds, instead spreading naturally across moist surfaces to form a living carpet.

Our Ultra-Fine Liverwort is cultivated on premium sphagnum moss, making it easy to establish in a new enclosure. – sold as +-3 x 3cm portions

💧 Humidity

Ultra-Fine Liverwort thrives in high humidity (65–100%).

It performs best in:

  • Closed terrariums
  • Paludariums
  • Moss propagation boxes
  • High-humidity vivariums

Low humidity will cause the edges to dry out and stop growing.

☀️ Lighting

Provide bright, indirect light. We grow them under 40% tunnel plastic!

Perfect lighting includes:

  • LED terrarium lighting
  • Bright windows without direct sun
  • Shaded greenhouse conditions

Avoid direct midday sunlight, which can quickly dry and scorch the delicate growth.

💦 Watering

Always keep the sphagnum moss consistently moist, but never waterlogged.

Use:

  • Rainwater
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) water
  • Distilled water

Avoid hard tap water where possible, as mineral build-up can reduce growth over time.

A light misting can help maintain humidity, but constantly soaking the liverwort is unnecessary if humidity remains high.

🌱 Growth

Ultra-Fine Liverwort spreads slowly by producing new branching growth across the moss surface. Under ideal conditions it gradually forms a dense, velvety carpet.

Growth is fastest when:

  • Humidity remains consistently high
  • Moisture is stable
  • Bright indirect light is provided
  • Air movement is gentle rather than strong

✂️ Maintenance

Very little maintenance is required.

Simply:

  • Remove dead or decaying material.
  • Trim back areas if they begin to overgrow neighbouring plants.
  • Keep algae under control by avoiding excessive nutrients.

🪴 Planting

Since it grows naturally on sphagnum moss, simply place the moss where you would like it to establish.

It can eventually spread onto:

  • Cork bark
  • Tree fern panels
  • Rocks
  • Other mosses
  • Moist wood

Keep the surface damp until it attaches and begins spreading.

⚠️ Common Problems

Usually caused by low humidity, drying out, or excessive direct sunlight.

Yellowing
Often indicates poor water quality, mineral build-up, or prolonged wet, stagnant conditions.

Slow growth
Usually results from insufficient humidity, low light, or the substrate drying between waterings.

Algae growth
Often occurs when excessive nutrients are present or airflow is poor.
