These plants are usually taller than foreground plants but not as big as background plants. They help to add more texture to your tank. These plants should not be allowed to grow too big as this can take away valuable swimming space and obscure the view to the background plants. A lot of the stem plants that are rated as background plants can easily be trimmed to be used as mid-ground plants.
