A true collector's agave, Agave titanota 'Black and Blue' is admired for its dramatic contrast of powdery blue-grey leaves lined with bold black teeth and a striking black terminal spine. The thick, sculptural leaves form a compact, symmetrical rosette, making this one of the most sought-after ornamental agaves for succulent enthusiasts.
This slow-growing variety develops exceptional colour and spine definition when grown in bright light. Whether displayed in a decorative pot, succulent collection, rock garden, or xeriscape, 'Black and Blue' makes an impressive statement plant with very little maintenance.
As it matures, the rosette typically reaches 30–60 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide, remaining compact for many years. Like most agaves, it is monocarpic, producing a spectacular flower spike after many years before the main rosette dies.
Care Sheet
Light
- Full sun to very bright light.
- Best colour develops with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.
- Can tolerate light afternoon shade in extremely hot climates.
Water
- Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again.
- Water more frequently during warm growing months.
- Reduce watering significantly during winter.
- Avoid constantly wet soil, as this can lead to root rot.
Soil
- Requires a very well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
- Adding coarse sand, pumice, or perlite will improve drainage.
Temperature
- Prefers warm, dry conditions.
- Protect from prolonged frost.
- Suitable for outdoor growing in warm climates or as a container plant that can be moved under cover during cold weather.
Fertiliser
- Feed sparingly during spring and summer with a balanced succulent fertiliser.
- Excess feeding is unnecessary and may reduce the plant's compact growth.
Growth Habit
- Slow-growing.
- Forms a solitary, compact rosette with thick blue-grey leaves and dramatic black marginal teeth.
- Excellent as a specimen plant or feature in succulent displays.
Maintenance
- Remove only dead or damaged lower leaves.
- Handle with care, as the sharp spines can cause injury.
- Wear gloves when repotting or moving the plant.
Pet & Safety Information
- Keep away from children and pets.
- The leaf sap may irritate skin, and the sharp spines can cause injury if handled carelessly.
