🌿 Micro Saxifraga (Saxifraga stolonifera ‘Micro’)
A miniature form of Strawberry Begonia — ideal for terrariums, mossariums and miniature landscapes.
💡 LIGHT
Bright, indirect light is best. It can tolerate lower light, but growth becomes slower and the plant may lose its compact appearance. Avoid strong direct sunlight, particularly inside closed terrariums, where temperatures can rise quickly.
💧 WATER
Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not permanently waterlogged. Allowing the plant to dry out completely can cause rapid deterioration.
For terrariums, high humidity is beneficial, but good airflow is still important. Avoid constantly wetting the crown and leaves.
🌡️ TEMPERATURE
Best growth: 18–26°C
It can tolerate warmer conditions for periods provided humidity and airflow are good. Avoid prolonged temperatures above 30°C, especially in enclosed terrariums.
💦 HUMIDITY
Prefers moderate to high humidity, making it particularly well suited to terrariums.
Aim for approximately 60–90% humidity, with some ventilation to prevent fungal problems.
🌱 SUBSTRATE
Use a light, moisture-retentive but well-aerated substrate.
A suitable mix could contain:
- Fine coco/peat
- Fine orchid bark
- Perlite or pumice
- A small amount of sphagnum
The substrate should retain moisture without becoming stagnant.
🌿 FEEDING
Feed lightly during active growth. Use a very dilute balanced fertiliser, approximately ¼ strength once every 3–4 weeks.
In a mature terrarium with organic substrate, considerably less fertiliser may be required.
✂️ GROWTH & PROPAGATION
Unlike the normal Saxifraga stolonifera, the Micro form remains considerably smaller, making it particularly useful for miniature terrariums.
It produces small plantlets on stolons, which can be separated and replanted once established.
🪴 BEST USE
⭐ Micro terrariums
⭐ Mossariums
⭐ Vivariums
⭐ Miniature landscapes
⭐ Shaded plant displays
Difficulty: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ Easy
Tip: Keep it moist, humid and well ventilated — Micro Saxifraga likes its feet wet, but doesn't appreciate being trapped in stagnant swamp conditions. 😄
