🌿 Drosera prolifera — Terrarium Sundew

Common name: Waterfall Sundew
Family: Droseraceae
Origin: Tropical northern Queensland, Australia

An Ideal Terrarium Carnivorous Plant

Drosera prolifera is an excellent choice for humid terrariums. Unlike many sundews that prefer strong sunlight and more open growing conditions, this tropical species naturally grows in warm, humid rainforest environments.

Its compact growth, attractive dew-covered leaves and ability to produce plantlets make it particularly suitable for closed or semi-closed terrariums, carnivorous plant displays and high-humidity vivariums.

☀️ Light

Provide bright, filtered light.

  • Bright artificial terrarium lighting works very well.
  • Avoid intense direct midday sunlight through glass, which can cause the terrarium to overheat.
  • Approximately 50–70% shade is suitable where natural sunlight is used.
  • Good light encourages compact, healthy growth and good dew production.

🌡️ Temperature

Keep warm and relatively stable.

  • Day: 22–30°C
  • Night: 18–24°C
  • Avoid prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
  • Protect from temperatures above 35°C.

No winter dormancy is required.

💦 Humidity

High humidity is one of the reasons this species makes such a good terrarium plant.

Ideal: 70–95% RH

A closed or partially closed terrarium can provide excellent conditions. In completely enclosed terrariums, occasional ventilation is still beneficial to prevent stagnant air and fungal problems.

💧 Water

Use RO, distilled or suitably low-TDS rainwater.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist. Do not allow it to dry out completely.

Avoid ordinary tap water where mineral levels are high.

🌱 Growing Medium

Use a nutrient-free, acidic carnivorous-plant substrate.

Recommended:

1 part long-fibre sphagnum : 1 part perlite

or

2 parts peat : 1 part perlite : 1 part silica sand

The substrate should remain moist but reasonably aerated.

Never use ordinary potting soil or fertilised soil.

🍽️ Feeding

Drosera prolifera catches tiny insects using its sticky leaves.

A terrarium containing small insects will often provide enough natural prey. If necessary, it can occasionally be fed very small prey or you can spray them lightly with Botaniqra Carnifuel .

Do not use ordinary plant fertiliser.

🌱 Propagation

This species is particularly interesting because it can produce plantlets from the tips of mature leaves.

Once a plantlet has developed several leaves and roots, it can be carefully separated and planted into moist carnivorous-plant substrate.

⚠️ Common Problems

Leaves drying or turning brown:
Usually caused by low humidity, excessive heat, insufficient moisture or excessive direct sunlight.

Little or no dew:
Check humidity, lighting, water quality and temperature.

Blackening or collapsing plants:
Can result from cold conditions, poor ventilation or prolonged waterlogging in poorly aerated substrate.

Slow growth:
Usually associated with inadequate light, unsuitable temperatures or poor water quality.

🌿 Why We Recommend It for Terrariums

Drosera prolifera is one of the sundews we particularly recommend for humid terrarium setups.

It combines:

Compact growth
Tropical conditions
High humidity tolerance
Attractive sticky carnivorous leaves
No winter dormancy
Ability to produce plantlets
Excellent suitability for closed and semi-closed terrariums

If you want a carnivorous plant for a humid tropical terrarium, Drosera prolifera is an excellent choice. 🌿🪰
